MLBL House League Playing Time Policy

 

1)  Each House team must play every team member at least fifty percent (50%) of the game in each game, not including overtimes.  This includes all regular season games and any ensuing MLBL tournament games. 

2)  Coaches are encouraged but not required to have players participate with equal amounts of time in each half.

3)  No player can play a fourth (4th) quarter of time until all other players on the team have played in three (3) quarters of time for that game.  For example, no player should play a full game while another has only played half.

4)  The following chart describes the minimum and maximums for playing time:

Maximum Playing Time Per Player:

Exception: when a team has less than 7 players

5)  Exceptions to the minimum playing time are as follows:

   a)   Injury,

   b)  Medical reason,

   c)   Discipline,

   d)  Excessive fouls.

         (1) Excessive fouls are defined as follows:

                  (a) Two (2) fouls before the end of the first (1st) quarter

                  (b) Three (3) fouls before the end of the second (2nd) quarter

                  (c) Four (4) fouls before the end of the third (3rd) quarter

 

6)  Exceptions to the maximum playing time rule are as follows:

   a)   Team has less than seven eligible players at the start of the game

   b)  Team has less than seven eligible players AND one or more players have received Excessive fouls as described in (5)d above

  

7)   Notification requirements for Playing Time Exceptions

   a)   For Injury or medical reasons exceptions:

       (1)  Coach must notify opposing coach prior to start of game (or during a timeout if the injury occurs during the game)

       (2)  Coach must notify the Division Coordinator in writing within 48 hours after the game

   b)  For discipline exceptions

       (1) Coach must notify Division Coordinator 48 hours prior to game and receive approval from Division Coordinator

       (2) Coach must show approval notice (e-mail) to opposing coach prior to the start of the game

   c)   For excessive fouls exception, or maximum playing time exception

       (1) Coach must notify opposing coach during a timeout or at halftime

       (2)  Coach must notify the Division Coordinator in writing within 48 hours after the game

 

8)  Enforcement of the Playing Time rules

   a)   All teams are required to designate one parent or the assistant coach to keep track of playing time.  The parent or assistant coach may not be working at the scorer’s table

   b)  Team is required to keep track of the opposing team’s playing time

   c)   Head Coach should collect the playing time sheet and turn into the Division Coordinator as part of the game report

 

 

9)  Penalties for playing time violations

   a)   1st Offense – Warning issued to coach from the league

   b)  2nd Offense – Team forfeits game and coach is suspended 1 game

   c)   3rd Offense – Team forfeits game and coach is suspended for season

 

 

Travel Teams:

Due to the competitive environment in our travel league games, Travel players must earn their playing time.  No minimum or maximums are set for the travel teams.  More information on playing times and the commitment for the travel program is found in the Travel section.
